Our final #SustainablistDesignVote voting is now open!
Previously on #SustainablistDesignVote: starting at the very beginning of the designing process, you helped us make some of the most important decisions: selecting a type of garment (you voted for a cardigan!), an inspiration story that we’re aiming to tell with the design, construction details (you went for a top-down raglan construction!), then the final design and last week a yarn base, Blacker Yarns’ Mohair Blends 4ply. Now before I tell you about our last voting, can I just say how much I enjoyed teaming up with you to create this new cardigan design? I’ve been wanting to do more community oriented projects for the longest time, and #SustainablistDesignVote has been an absolutely wonderful experience. I’m looking forward to sharing more insights into the next steps we’ll be taking with this design here soon, and if this is something you’d be interested in, I think I’d love to make #SustainablistDesignVote a regular thing! Please feel free to tell me in the comments if this is something you’d like to participate in again, and I’ll set up a query for more detailed feedback soon, too.
But for today, it’s all about Blacker Yarns’ beautiful colourways! With the help of our Instagram community, I curated a selection of 4 colourways: Blisland, Ladock Woods, Metherell and Tregadillett (all photos by Blacker Yarns). One of them will be used for the official design sample, and you get to choose which one you’d like to see in the design photos!
For this last #SustainablistDesignVote voting, we also have a very special price for you! One lucky winner will receive a project quantity of the original yarn in a colourway of your choice. For a chance to win, simply vote for your choice below (select only one, please!), make sure to come back as we share more about the designing process from here on over the next couple of weeks, and now scroll down to read what Katie from Blacker Yarns shares with us!
With voting, you consent to automatically join our Sustainablist email list, the community we share the latest news from the Sustainablist HQ , special offers and all the fun stuff with every other week. For the duration of #SustainablistDesignVote only, we'll send you an email when the next voting round opens. Please note that you need to confirm your subscription in order to be eligible for a prize and for your vote to be taken into account. You can change how you receive our emails any time.
Blacker’s Mohair Blends, photo by Blacker Yarns
Hi Katie, and thanks so much for joining me today to share some behind-the-scenes! First of all, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and Blacker Yarns?
I work for Blacker Yarns, where we produce a range of luxury knitting yarns made exclusively from British sheep, all spun and dyed under one roof in Cornwall. We are able to do both woollen and worsted processing, which means we really focus on what is best for different breeds and fibres, enhancing their natural characteristics. We’re proud of the fact that each of our bases feels different, lending themselves to all sorts of different projects.
What are the core values you care about most?
We very much care about sourcing quality fibres, as locally as we can so we can be assured of the welfare of the animals. All of the wool we buy is British, from small producers whom we know and trust. When we use fibres from further afield – linen from Belgium and Ahimsa silk from India – we look both for quality and sustainable, ethical production.
What do you love most about your work?
I don’t think I could pick one thing I love the most about my job, because it is really about the whole process. Taking a product through from raw fleece to finished yarn, and launching it along with knitting and crochet patterns design especially for that specific blend: it’s incredibly satisfying. I also love meeting and interacting with our customers and seeing the beautiful projects they choose to make with our yarns.
What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you and your work?
I think people are often surprised by the size of our team. Kamila and I look after the day-to-day running of Blacker Yarns, with occasional support from lovely interns. That means almost all of your phone calls, emails and orders are dealt with by the two of us. We love getting to speak with our customers every day.
